What is a Crib?
A crib is essentially a small enclosed bed made from metal or wood with high barred walls to prevent baby falling or climbing out, even when they start standing.
Cribs can be either stationary or with wheels to make them portable.
A crib mattress ensures a good level of comfort, and mattress heights are often adjustable.
A standard size crib has interior dimensions of 52 3⁄8 ± 5⁄8 inches (133 ± 1.6 centimeters) in length and 28 ± 5⁄8 inches (71 ± 1.6 centimeters) in width. It’s also possible to find mini cribs which are suitable when space is at a premium.
There are many different styles of crib available, including convertible cribs which can transform into other styles of bed, portable cribs that can be folded up for travelling, and cribs with integrated changing tables or storage.
What Crib Is Best For Baby?
Without doubt the most important feature of any crib is that it is safe for baby.
All new cribs must comply with the latest guidelines from the CPSC and be safety certified by the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association.
This includes having a tight fitting mattress no more than 6 inches thick, no more than 2 3/8 inch gaps between bars or slats, and no sharp edges, exposed hardware, rough areas or peeling paint, or splintered or cracked wood.
A good crib mattress should be firm rather than soft, and reach right to the sides of the crib in order to provide a good level of support and reduce the risk of suffocation.
Adjustable height cribs means that you can change the height to suit how tall you are, making it easier to put baby down to sleep. Cribs that can be lowered allow you to change the height as your baby grows and starts to stand up.
A good crib will be strong and sturdy and made from high grade materials. It shouldn’t wobble or rattle around.
Cribs that feature wheels or casters are a great idea as they make it easy to move the crib around, but ensure that wheels are lockable so that there is no risk that the crib will move if your baby or toddler moves around inside it.
A crib is a considerable investment, so a crib that can be converted into a toddler bed, day bed, or full size bed is a huge bonus, as it can be used for many years to come.
Ease of Assembly
Most cribs available for purchase will arrive flat packed so you’ll have to assemble it your self.
Of course, this is generally a good thing as it keeps costs low and is easier to transport, but you want to make sure that you won’t be outwitted by the assembly process!
Just take a look at Ryan Reynolds trying to construct one from IKEA…
How Long Do Cribs Last?
There is no fixed time when baby should transition to a bed, but generally it’s when they are around 18 months to 3.5 years old, or when they are simply too big or too active to sleep in a crib anymore.
Buying a convertible crib which can be converted into a bigger bed can increase its longevity considerably, as it is designed to change to suit your child as they grow.
Baby Crib Cost Guide
With such a wide variety of cribs available there is something to suit all tastes and budgets.
As a guide, the cost of a basic full size crib starts at around $100 all the way up to around $800, with prices for more elaborate cribs costing anywhere upwards of $1000.
Mini cribs and portable cribs are a little cheaper, ranging from between $100 and $400 on average.
Things To Know Before Buying A Crib
Are Crib Bumpers Ever Safe?
While they may look cute and cozy, crib bumpers can be hazardous for your baby.
In 2011 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) introduced recommendations that parents shouldn’t use crib bumpers as they carry a potential risk of suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment.
Since the introduction of these guidelines, breathable mesh bumpers have started coming on the market, and although these may seem like a safer option, it’s still better not to take the risk. Say no to crib bumpers.
Are Crib Rail Guards Safe?
The AAP is especially strong in its stance that nothing be in the crib with the baby for the first year of life, and this includes crib rail guards.
That said, cribs that come with crib rail guards already supplied will have put them through rigorous testing to be sure that they are safe.
If you do opt to install crib rail guards on your baby’s crib, make sure that they are correctly and safely fastened, that they don’t have any parts or fixings that could become detached such as buttons which could be potential choking hazards, and that they are installed way out of baby’s reach for at least the first 6 months.
What To Look For In a Crib Mattress?
It is vital that your crib mattress adheres to the safety standards defined by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Society for Testing and Materials.
It is also crucial that the mattress is firm and not soft, as soft sleeping surfaces are associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Likewise the mattress should be exactly the right size to fit snugly in the crib without any more than a 1 inch gap around the edges.
A gap any bigger than that could result in a newborn’s head getting trapped and potentially lead to suffocation.
Are Crib Mobiles Good For Babies?
Crib mobiles provide excellent developmental benefits like visual and sound stimulation, motor skills, and relaxation — as well as looking cute.
As long as they are correctly installed and conform to the AAP safety standards, crib mobiles are safe for baby.
Mobile strings longer than 7 inches are dangerous for your baby, and avoid crib mobiles with detachable parts that may fall off and be a choking hazard.
Set the crib mobile up a minimum of 12 inches away from your baby’s face when lying flat, safely out of reach.
