With their revolutionary mattress technology, Tuft and Needle have burst on to the sleep tech scene in a big way.
And I love their product: the Tuft And Needle Original Mattress (available on Amazon and Tuft & Needle).
Sure, they’re regarded as the new kids on the block when it comes to the mattress industry but this Phoenix-based startup is leading the high-quality, high-efficiency, no-gimmick sleep market right now.
Neither cheap nor expensive, these mattresses are perfect for the person who wants the best night sleep they can get, without handing over half their wages for a legacy firm’s product.

The Positives
The Tuft and Needle Mattress has really been setting the sleep tech world on fire in the last few years because everyone finds it comfortable.
Well, everyone I’ve spoken to anyway.
Regardless of where you are on the sleep firmness spectrum, you should find contentment in this mattress. They’ve really fine tuned their product so that it’s the best of both worlds, enjoying the support of a firm mattress with the luxe comfort of a softer one.
Unless you’re at the extreme edges of what you find comfortable, I think you’ll be sleeping soundly on a Tuft & Needle Original — regardless of whether you’re on your back, side or stomach.
Let’s face it, most of us aren’t only using our mattresses for sleep.
But fear not — those who indulge in, ahem, night time bed-based activities will find that the T&N Originaal is up to the task and then some.
One of my routine complaints about memory foam is that you sink in and it wraps around your body. Comfortable, sure, but not the best for activities like getting out of bed.
The Tuft and Needle adaptive foam, however, has got an excellent bounce to it.
But that doesn’t mean that you’ll be waking up your partner every time you get in and out of bed. All movement is localized and there’s an impressively minimal motion transfer.
The unique adaptive foam is seriously something to write home about.
Not only is it super comfortable, but it offers a fantastic level of support that’s normally only observed in much more expensive models.
The foam ensures your weight is evenly distributed through your body, providing excellent pressure point relief that rivals the most sophisticated memory foam configurations.
People suffering from back problems have reported good findings from the Tuft & Needle Original as it’s been specially calibrated to support the entire body and align your neck, spine and general posture.
The adaptive foam distributes your body weight evenly across the mattress, relieving any pressure on any individual sore spots and allowing you to experience a ‘float-like’ sleep.
Even people not suffering from back problems will find that the sheer comfort of this mattress eliminates the tossing and turning to get comfortable that’s usually experienced in bed, leading to an overall better sleeping experience.
Tuft & Needle advertize a 100 night trial period on their website (make sure you double check that this applies if you’re buying from another retailer), which is a great feature to have on a mattress bought online.
If you decide the mattress isn’t for you during that period, simply get in contact to arrange to have it returned.
Simple.
Encouragingly, something like 95% of customers hang on to their mattress despite this generous trial period.
Like many direct to consumer mattress brands nowadays, Tuft & Needle provide an efficient and easy shipping process, whereby the mattress is vacuum packed and folded into a reasonably small box and delivered direct to your door.
Once the packaging has been removed, the mattress expands to its full size relatively quickly, so it’s best to unpack it when you’ve already transported it to your bedroom.
They officially advise that the full expansion period should take about 12 hours — quite a lot quicker than most vacuum packed mattresses.
Here’s the company’s official video on how to best unbox the product:
As you can see from the video, they package the Tuft and Needle mattress in a very stylish box — I was very excited to see mine arrive kerbside!
- Sleeps cooler than memory foam and latex
- Made in the USA
- Feedback driven customer service
- Ingredients are CertiPUR-US certified and emissions Greenguard Gold certified
- Will fit most frames and foundations
The Negatives
Now, I’m not saying that you’re likely to roll off the bed if you buy this mattress, but it’s definitely not as reinforced at the edges as I’d like it to be.
This is unlikely to affect buyers of the larger size models, but for those of us on the Twin or sharing a Queen, for instance, may feel like there’s no quite enough support around the perimeter.
There are mixed reports about whether this Tuft and Needle mattress gives out any smell when it’s initially unpacked.
While it’s certainly nowhere near as pungent as many traditional memory foam mattresses, there is definitely a degree of off-gassing present that may be more noticeable in a small bedroom.
I’d recommend airing it out for as long as possible to avoid this if you’ve got a sensitive nose.
Tuft And Needle Original Mattress: The Details
Specs
This particular mattress is the Queen, 10-Inch configuration.
- Product Dimensions: 60 x 80 x 10 inches
- Item Weight: 70 pounds (ships at 78.1 pounds)
- Available in: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King
Material Composition
Choosing the third way between memory foam and latex, the startup have created their own 100% unique Tuft and Needle Adaptive Foam, which was made from scratch, hand in hand with world leading scientists.
The structure and texture of this foam was informed by the feedback they’ve received over the years from their customers. It’s just as adaptive and pressure relieving as traditional memory foam, with the bounce and support features of latex, plus it sleeps cool thanks to the combination of gel and graphite.
It’s a dual layer mattress made of high-density polyurethane, petroleum-based, CertiPUR-US foam. It’s certified to be free form formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, PBDEs and carcinogens.
The bottom layer is 7 inches of base support that ensures correct alignment of your neck and spine.
Under the cover is a TB-117 compliant fire barrier, free from chemicals, that doesn’t make contact with the skin.
Tuft & Needle: The Brand
It can be unnerving buying a mattress online when you don’t get to test it out beforehand — doubly so if you haven’t heard of the company behind the product.
But while Tuft and Needle are relatively new on the scene, they’re certainly ascending the ladder quickly to become a household name.
Started by two good friends in 2012 after becoming frustrated with the overhyped and overpriced mattress industry, Tuft and Needle was launched to transform forever the way mattresses are designed and sold.
They’ve only got one model (albeit available in a slew of different sizes) and designed it with the aim of achieving universal comfort.
Adding a level of trust to their brand is the fact that Tuft and Needle are based in Phoenix and make their mattresses right here in the US. No shipping to and from China! Plus, they offer an amazing 100 night trial meaning that you can try it, love it or return it really easily.
We love when brands go the extra mile for their customers, and Tuft & Needle are at the forefront of that movement.
Overall Verdict
I highly recommend the Tuft and Needle Original mattress to anyone looking for a high quality and innovative mattress, at the fraction of the cost of the ‘legacy’ companies like Tempurpedic and Sealy.
A combination of the universal comfort, 100 night trial and unparalleled customer service make dealing with this company a real pleasure.
The only real complaint I have is that the edges of the mattress are a little soft — otherwise, I love it! It’s great for bad backs and insomnia sufferers alike.
Don’t blame me if you don’t want to get out of bed in the morning…
