HTS Verdict

I’m really impressed with this cheap hybrid mattress and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a high degree of comfort and support for a really reasonable price.

There is some compromise to be had — most notably, it didn’t stay cool all night in a hot climate — but I’d say it’s an eminently worthy purchase if that’s not a dealbreaker for you.

Pros

  • Firm yet incredibly comfortable
  • Deeply supportive
  • Excellent price
  • Minimal motion transfer
  • Bouncy
  • No off-gassing
  • 10 year warranty

Cons

  • Can run a little hot
  • Cover is non-removable
  • Set-up is a little frustrating

The BedStory Gel Hybrid Mattress (available from Amazon and BedStory) rides the perfect line between luxury comfort and affordability.

Composed of gel-infused memory foam and pocket coil, this mattress is plushly firm with an impressive degree of support — exactly what most people are looking for when they buy a hybrid mattress.

That being said, it’s always worth knowing the downsides before making a big purchase as well. Will it sleep a little too warm for your tastes? Will you get as annoyed as I did that you have to flip it over once you’ve unrolled it out the box?!

Nevertheless, before you make your final decision, let’s take a closer look at the BedStory Gel Hybrid Mattress.

The Positives

Highly Supportive

BedStory 12 Inch Gel Hybrid Mattress review

One way that cheaper mattresses often value engineer themselves to look good at a low price is to compromise on support. But I was surprised at the high degree of support offered by the BedStory Gel Hybrid.

It works equally great for back, side, and stomach sleepers which means that it’s supportive for pretty much everyone!

The different layers of foam and the pocketed coils ensure that the mattress conforms to your body, as memory foam is designed to, while the coils ensure it’s not too soft, leaving you to sink deeply into the cushioning.

It also has a ‘Euro Top’ design, which is a small layer at the top expressly designed for targeted pressure relief and the ability to conform to your body’s contours.

A supportive bed also means your mattress will be the perfect place to recover after a long, strenuous day, or if you’re recovering from sickness or injury. I know a few people with back problems have rated this mattress as great for relieving aches and pains.

Comfortable

But what’s support if you don’t have comfort to go hand-in-hand?

Happily, BedStory hits it out of the park here as well.

The many different levels of foam envelop the coils to prevent any sharp edges, while also molding to your body for personalized cushioning.

Some of the cheaper hybrid mattresses I’ve tried in the past have left me almost feeling bruised in the morning from the lack of cushioning around the coils. That’s not the case here; it’s definitely very comfortable.

And since it doesn’t matter what position you sleep in, there’s no need to adjust your sleeping preferences to make this bed work for you. It will be comfortable if you sleep on your stomach, back, or side.

The mix of the spring coils and the memory foam ensures nearly anyone will find this mattress comfortable for them.

Excellent Price

Not only is the BedStory Hybrid a cheaper mattress, it represents real value for money.

Hybrids are generally more expensive than your typical foam beds, but this one is accessible to a wide range of limited budgets while seemingly not scrimping on quality.

It also comes with a 10 year warranty, so you can rest easy when it comes to durability.

Minimal Motion Transfer

While some mattresses with springs can have issues with motion transfer, that thankfully isn’t a problem with this BedStory mattress.

If you’ve ever been woken up because your partner is tossing and turning or because they had to go to the bathroom, you can rest easy – this is highly stable and you’re very unlikely to wake.

If your partner has an earlier wake-up time than you, you won’t feel them shift off the bed. The coils all move independently of each other, so pushing down on some of the coils won’t affect the others.

Bouncy

bedstory mattress review

One of the major benefits you get with a pocket coil mattress or a hybrid like this one is a little bit of bounce in the surface.

While memory foam has multiple benefits, the feeling of ‘sinking into’ the mattress can be quite hard to escape. You don’t get that feeling with this mattress and it’s nicely responsive.

Not only does this mean good things for durability, a good bit of bounce can be a bonus for, er, other bed-based activities that don’t involve sleeping! 😉

No Off-Gassing

Let me tell you, it is rare to have a memory foam mattress that presents with no odors.

The various chemicals used in the manufacturing and distribution processes for memory foam are notorious for causing serious off-gassing once the mattress has been unpacked by the end customer. But I didn’t get a whiff of anything with the BedStory Gel Hybrid.

You will need to allow up to 72 hours for expansion anyway, but don’t be concerned if you’ve got a sensitive nose.

The Negatives

Can Trap Heat

best hybrid mattress

I had high hopes of the BedStory Hybrid sleeping cool what with the top cool gel memory foam layer that’s meant to release trapped heat.

I wouldn’t describe it as a ‘hot’ mattress per se — and it actually feels nice and cool to the touch when you first lay down on it — but did wake up quite warm after a particular hot night weather-wise.

If a cool mattress that stays cool all night, regardless of the temperature outside, is important to you, then you may want to look elsewhere, I’m afraid.

Non-Intuitive Set-Up

One particularly frustrating thing about the BedStory Hybrid is the set-up.

First up, this is a heavy mattress — if you’ve gone for one of the big sizes, you’re probably going to need assistance moving the box into place.

But the stupidest thing is that when you unroll and release the mattress per instructions, it’s the wrong way round! So then you need to flip it. Hopefully whoever helped you bring in the mattress is still around!

Not a deal-breaker by any means, but definitely worth being aware of.

Can't Remove the Cover

Another bugbear of mine that shouldn’t be a dealbreaker is the fact that you seemingly can’t remove the cover.

It always surprises me how many mattresses (particularly at the cheaper end of the spectrum) don’t have a removable cover.

You can still spot clean it, but as someone who is very keen on sleep hygiene, ideally I’d want to be able to remove it every so often for a good deep clean in the washing machine.

As always, I’d recommend using a mattress cover or pad to improve its longevity and for general cleanliness.

Material Composition

bedstory mattress review

The BedStory Gel Hybrid Mattress is composed of multiple layers of foam and coils, which lay on top of each other to make up the 12-inch thickness.

Pocket Coil
The bottom layer is 7.5 inches of pocket coil that provides firm base support. It’s reinforced around the edges.
Support Foam
Then a 1 inch support foam layer stops the heavier parts of your body from sinking too far and feeling the coils.
Dual Layer Soft Wave Foam
Next is 2.5 inches of Dual Layer Soft Wave Foam, providing a plush layer of comfort and the ability to conform to the contours of your body.
Cool Gel Memory Foam
On top is an inch of cool gel memory foam, ostensibly to release trapped heat and provide targeted pressure relief.
Stretchy Knit Cover
While the cover isn’t removable like some other mattresses, you can still easily spot clean it, using a light detergent mixed with some water. Let it dry and the stain should be gone.

Overall Verdict

If you’re looking for a cheap hybrid mattress, I would definitely recommend the BedStory Gel Hybrid Mattress.

It’s not perfect — it can sleep a little warm, the set-up is a bit annoying and the cover can’t be removed — but it really outperforms its price category when it comes to comfort and support.

Firm while still feeling luxuriously plush, bouncy and pressure-relieving, this mattress is definitely going to help you get a good night’s sleep.
