HTS Verdict
If you’re on a budget, it’s worth considering the Zinus Green Tea 6-Inch Memory Foam mattress. It would make a great guest bed.
It does have some issues — namely a lack of support for heavier people, and can run a little warm on hot nights.

The Zinus Green tea 6-Inch Memory Foam Mattress (available on Amazon) has got a lot of fans thanks to its low price and unique green tea formulation.
I’ll be honest and say I had no idea of the merits of green tea in a mattress (and I’m not entirely sure that I do now even after testing the mattress) but it’s always interesting to try a product that’s doing something different.
The Zinus is definitely comfortable, cheap and conveniently delivered — but don’t expect it to be hugely more than that. At just 6 inches thick, this is hardly a luxury tier mattress.
Let’s have a closer look to see if it could be the mattress for you.

Positives
At the end of the day, the most important thing about a new mattress is how comfortably you will be able to sleep on it. So, is the Zinus Green Tea Memory Foam mattress comfortable?
I’m happy to give a resounding ‘yes’.
But let’s be clear — this isn’t a luxury mattress and nor does it pretend to be. It’s got a firm feel and, at only 6 inches thick, doesn’t have that plush feel that a more expensive mattress might boast.
It does, however, relieve pressure points and provide adequate support — providing you don’t have any specialist support needs (more on this in The Negatives).
Perhaps you have a relative or colleague who likes to lecture you about the health benefits of drinking green tea.
Either way, you probably guessed that the green tea extract infused into this mattress for the purpose of keeping it fresh is much safer to sleep on nightly than most of the other chemical preservatives that can be added into other foam mattresses.
That’s not the only exciting thing about the materials in Zinus’ mattresses though; they also replace a significant chunk of the chemicals used in other memory foam products with harmless plant oils.
All of Zinus’ mattress foam is certified by CertiPUR and also contains charcoal to cut down on unwanted smells and moisture.
Undoubtedly one of the most attractive things about the Zinus Green Tea Mattress is it’s very low price tag.
Cheap memory foam mattresses are pretty common these days, but this is certainly one of the best ones I’ve tested at this very low price point.
Zinus are well known for keeping their prices low and their mattresses easily compete with higher up brands in terms of comfort and convenience, without running you over budget.
This would be a great option for anyone on a budget or those buying for a dorm room or guest bedroom.
At only six inches thick, this mattress is teeny.
While this might seem more of a negative at first, it makes shipping and unboxing a breeze, since the mattress is able to be compressed into a manageably-sized box, instead of hauled around at its final size.
Once you have the mattress, all you have to do is take it out of the box, unroll it, and let it expand to its normal dimensions.
Its small size also makes it convenient to put aside for guest visits or bring with you when moving.
Negatives
The biggest negative to the Zinus Green Tea mattress is a lack of support.
I don’t think this will be a problem for most people of average weight with no joint or back issues, but if you are heavier or simply require a little more support from your mattress, I think you will be disappointed.
I think this is probably attributable to the fact that it’s only 6 inches thick — most premium mattresses have more inches than this in sheer support layers, never mind additional memory foam and the like.
In fairness, Zinus are very upfront about this inadequacy and outline in their Amazon listing that it’s really only suitable for a combined weight of 500 lbs (just 250 lbs for the Twin configuration).
Memory foam is notorious for releasing odors when its first unpacked and the Zinus Green Tea Mattress — even with only an inch of it — is no exception to this.
The smell didn’t linger for too long — it was gone after the 48 hour expansion period — but I’d recommend airing it out in a well ventilated room once you’ve unpacked it.
For only a 6-inch thick mattress, I wasn’t expecting a full 48-hour expansion period. And it definitely needs the full 2 days, which is surprising given the fact that there’s only 1 inch of memory foam.
This isn’t a dealbreaker but it is a little annoying and means that you can’t get rid of your old mattress until this one has been in place for a couple of days.
Or resign yourself to a couple of nights on the sofa 🤷🏽♂️
Another #MemoryFoamProblem is the fact that it’s known to trap heat, especially if cooling features haven’t been engineered.
I always expect to sleep a little warm when I try out a cheap memory mattress as they generally don’t have these cooling features.
The Zinus Green Tea definitely didn’t sleep as hot as I’d expected it to, but I was a little warm when I woke in the morning. I do live in a hot climate which is worth bearing in mind.
If this is an issue for you, I’d definitely recommend keeping the knitted jacquard cover between the mattress and your sheets as a heat barrier. Or even look at a gel foam mattress or one with springs if you’re very concerned.
Zinus Memory Foam 6 Inch Green Tea Mattress: The Details
Specs
For the Queen configuration:
- Product Dimensions: 80″ x 60″ x 6″
- Item Weight: 32.7 lbs
- Available in: Twin, Full, Short Queen, Queen and King, 8 inches thick, 12 inches thick, Twin XL (8 and 12″ only), and California King (8 and 12″ only)
Material Composition
The base layer of the mattress is four inches of very dense foam.
This is engineered to let air flow through it, for the purpose of alleviating the all-too-common problem of memory foam that traps body heat, leaving the person sleeping on it to wake up sweaty and uncomfortable.
That’s not the only cool thing about this foam layer: it also contains organic plant oils in place of many of the normal chemicals you would find in a standard memory foam mattress.
The next layer is one inch of High Density Support Foam which has open air pockets to encourage breathability, cradles your joints and aligns your spine.
The top inch of memory foam adds a layer of pressure-relieving comfort to this Zinus mattress.
It’s also infused with green tea and ActivCharcoal, which preserves the material and keeps it fresher for longer. Who knew green tea could go into a mattress? It turns out, it’s just as soothing to lay down on as it is to drink.
Zinus: The Brand
Green tea isn’t the only new idea Zinus has brought into the world of sleep products.
With a slogan like “Pioneering Comfort,” you know they are committed to providing customers with a wide range of inventive features that will allow them to explore innovative ways to make sure they get a good night’s sleep.
The business first began in 1979 as part of a company that manufactured and sold outdoor equipment. Zinus branched off in 2003, specializing in indoor sleep products, ranging from mattresses like this one to bedframes and coffee tables.
They began selling through third-party online retailers and quickly gained popularity for their competitive prices and new approaches to traditional concepts, such as foam and spring mattresses.
By living up to their slogan and building this reputation, they were eventually able to open up premises in multiple continents, including their corporate headquarters in San Leandro, CA, and their main factory in Xiamen, China.
In 2016, they went live with their own eCommerce website. You can find their products there as well as the same online retailers they started out with, such as Amazon.
Overall Verdict
I would cautiously recommend the Zinus Green Tea 6 Inch Memory Foam Mattress to someone on a budget, with a few caveats.
It’s undoubtedly available at a great price, is comfortable, and conveniently delivered. However, it’s not supportive enough if you have more specialist needs and can run a little warm in hot weather.
I do think it would make a great guest bed or dorm bed as it’s very comfortable and more than fine for shorter term use.
