I’ll talk you through the ins and outs of The Pod and whether it’s actually any good as a mattress in terms of the fundamentals — comfort and support.
Let’s get into it…

The Positives
I’m definitely a geek — particularly when it comes to sleep — and the amount of control The Pod gives you over the climate in this bed is nothing short of amazing.
Firstly, the cooling and heating technology is dual zone, meaning that you can set different temperatures on each side of the bed. This is an absolute god-send for people sharing a bed who have different preferences. You can also schedule on and off when you want the technology to kick in.
It’s all controlled through the (free) Eight Sleep app and your 8+ membership. Lifetime membership access is included free with your purchase of The Pod.
Another feature controlled by the app is the sleep tracking capability.
Again, it’s smart enough to distinguish between both sides of the bed so you’ll get an accurate, personal sleep overview when you wake every morning.
It measures metrics including sleep stages, sleep time, tossing and turning, heat rate and more.
The fundamentals of what makes a good mattress — comfort and support — are almost the side show to The Pod with all it’s fancy technology. But I’m happy to report that they haven’t skimped in this area either and it makes for an excellent night sleep regardless of all the bells and whistles.
Comfort is paramount with its 11 inch depth and it’s expertly engineered to relieve pressure points, align the spine and just gently cradle you into dreamland.
If you want even more, check out The Pod Pro which weighs in at an impressive 12 inches and is marginally softer for it. It comes with some extra bits and bobs too.
Eight Sleep have designed The Pod with couples in mind, meaning that all the movement on each side of the bed is isolated.
You no longer have to worry about waking the person next to you if you’re a restless sleeper or vice versa.
It will also keep you from waking if you have pets or children who like to sneak into the bed in the middle of the night. Although, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up to you!
This mattress neither sinks like a hammock or feels like a wooden table when you lay on it. It hugs you and conforms to your body type in a way that supports your joints all around: good news if you wake up with body pains on your regular mattress.
The Pod works to evenly distribute your weight about the bed, eliminating pressure points and properly aligning your spine and neck.
You can tell just by touching the mattress that the materials used are top quality. The feel of the mattress makes it seem worth more than it actually is.
Some may say the Eight Sleep Pod Mattress is rather pricey compared to others in the market (and it’s true), but it’s a great investment if you want a good quality mattress that truly gives you the good night’s rest you need.
Also, thanks to the quality materials, the mattress will last a long time. I’m sure there will be no complaints about a sagging middle area after a few years. Plus, there’s a 10 year limited warranty on the foam body to fall back on anyway.
No more worrying about that horrible, uncomfortable heat that gets trapped under your body on your mattress. The top layers of the Eight Sleep Premium Mattress are made of breathable materials, so it keeps you cool at night.
And I’m happy to say that this holds true regardless of what type of climate you’re sleeping in. No more night sweats! The temperature control is excellent.
I say this of basically all mattresses that you can purchase online, but I love the smart shipping from Eight.
It’s compressed, rolled and delivered right to your door in a surprisingly compact box. Just remember to take it all the way to your bedroom before unpacking as it expands so quickly!
Quite a few mattress companies offer a trial period nowadays because, let’s face it, buying a mattress online sight unseen is a bit of a gamble.
The trial is particularly important for a mattress like The Pod.
Firstly, it’s expensive, so you want to be sure that it’s right for you. And secondly, there’s a lot going on — temperature control, sleep tracking, an app — and I think it’s worth finding out if you actually need and will use all these features before you commit.
100 nights is a generous trial period and it feels appropriate. By the 3 month mark you should be well aware if you’re taking advantage of the full features of The Pod or if it’d be better to go back to a more ‘normal’ mattress instead.
The Negatives
I absolutely love The Pod but I am a self-confessed sleep hacking geek. Will this be a good mattress for the masses? Probably not.
A lot of people will look at this mattress and think… ‘it’s a bit… much’.
Because while some of us love the idea that your mattress can track your sleep habits and adjust itself automatically to your desired temperature on each side of the mattress, most just want a mattress that’s comfortable and supportive.
That’s it. That’s all there is to a good mattress.
By most standards, Eight’s The Pod is excessive and I’m not sure how widespread its appeal will be.
Is it a good mattress? Definitely. Is it useful? For sure. Is it necessary for a good night’s sleep. Not really.
In tandem with the above is the price tag. This ain’t a cheap mattress by any measure. A lot of potential customers will simply be priced out.
Having said that, I do think it’s a fair price. The quality is exceptional and the technology innovative and pioneering.
But if your budget won’t stretch that far, you won’t be too far away with another good mattress and a sleep tracking device.
Once unrolled and inflated to the fullest, you should expect a little off-gassing from the foam.
It took a little longer than I expected for the smell to completely wear off — a couple of nights in total.
It wasn’t too bad and certainly improved with time. Just air out your bedroom for a bit if this concerns you.

One thing’s for sure — The Pod is impressive.
It’s not for everyone, but if you want a high quality mattress that allows for dual zone heating and cooling, and sleep tracking, all controlled via an app, then this is really the mattress for you.
