Zenhaven uses a special latex called Talalay, which has properties that make it vastly superior compared to the Dunlop latex commonly used in mattresses.
Like normal latex, Talalay is derived from the liquid in rubber trees, but the process of converting that liquid into solid mattress layers sets it apart.
After the liquid latex is filled into a mould, a vacuum is used to fill the mould completely and evenly, after which the Latex is flash frozen at -20 degrees fahrenheit to seal in particles for an even distribution.
The vacuuming process allows for less latex to be needed to fill a mould, which means there is less filler latex used.
Flash freezing allows for the Latex cells to be 50% bigger than those found in Dunlop, promoting a much greater airflow and keeping you cooler at night.
This makes Talalay latex much more resilient and springy, meaning a comfier, bouncier, more elevated feel.
The process also makes Talalay conform more to body curvature, alleviating pressure points and providing superior support.
This mattress’ cover is made with quilted, organic cotton for an initial layer of comfort.
Organic Wool Layer
100% organic New Zealand wool gives this mattress a flame-retardant barrier, so in case a nearby candle ignites the mattress, you can rest assured knowing that it won’t scorch the bed.
This layer is also moisture wicking and breathable, which means you won’t be greeted by a pool of sweat when you wake up.
Latex 5-Zone Comfort Layer
This layer is made with Talalay latex and has five zones of varying densities for firm support under the shoulders and torso, as well as comfortable support for other areas of the body.
It also promotes superior spinal alignment.
Latex Support Cores
The bottom layer is also made of Talalay latex for resilient support that will last you for years to come.
Zenhaven: The Brand
Zenhaven is a sibling brand born from the success of Saatva’s innerspring mattress and Loom & Leaf’s memory foam mattress.
Saatva – and Zenhaven by extension – is a firm believer in providing a luxury mattress at an affordable price without all the gimmicks and hassle.
The company’s success is built on customer satisfaction and feedback, priding themselves on listening to the customer’s needs and adjusting their mattresses and services to better accommodate them.
Based in both Westport, Connecticut, and Austin, Texas, all mattresses are made in the U.S. The company also believes in giving back and has donated hundreds of mattresses to those in need.
Zenhaven Mattress Review
The Zenhaven mattress has a lot of positive aspects, some of which you won’t find from other brands, but also a few downsides to consider.
Stand Out Features:
- 20 Year Warranty: It’s very rare you will find a mattress, or any product with such a long warranty. Zenhaven backs their mattresses with a promise of two decades so you know these mattresses are made to last.
- Two Mattress in One: If you’re indecisive, want the best of both worlds, or just have a fear of missing out, you won’t have to compromise with Zenhaven. Their mattresses offer both a firm and soft side so you can decide which one you prefer yourself, and makes it easy to switch if your needs change.
- Flame Retardant: If you’re into setting an ambiance or relaxing with candles near your bed, you can worry a little less thanks to the Zenhaven mattresses being made with a natural flame retardant wool.
2-in-1 Comfort Technology
Goldilocks had to choose between three different beds to find the one she loved the best, but with Zenhaven, you won’t ever have to make that choice.
One side of the mattress is designed for soft sleeping and the other is designed for firm sleeping, and to decide which one you want, all you have to do is flip it over!
The top layer and bottom layer are interchangeable with an equal amount of support Latex in between, so that each side gives you the feel you want.
Talalay Latex not only provides coolness and support, it also provides the luxurious feel this mattress is known for.
The Zenhaven has just the right amount of bounce while feeling as if you’re weightless in bed.
While your body melts away into bliss, the mattress is hard at work providing all the right support in all the right places.
Nobody likes that new-mattress smell, but the Zenhaven has no off-gassing smell whatsoever.
Latex has none of the volatile compounds that memory foam mattresses are made of, and its these compounds that give off that awful smell.
No smell, no worries.
No Allergies, No Bugs, No Chemicals
Zenhaven is designed with the sleeper in mind. This being said, the mattress has features that help with common issues known to occur.
It’s hypoallergenic for sleepers with allergies, and it’s mould resistant so there won’t be any smells or potential health concerns down the road.
The mattress is built to protect against microbes and dust mites, so you won’t have to fear for the creatures you can’t see.
Despite being made from latex, there are no harmful chemicals that put your health at risk.
The great thing about latex is that it isn’t capable of trapping heat, and since majority of the bed is made of Latex, you’re guaranteed a cool night’s sleep.
Open cells within the latex facilitate air circulation, and the top wool layer helps to keep you cooler than the the other side of the pillow.
Here’s a video showing a heat retention test on the Zenhaven mattress:
We all know that it takes more than 5 minutes on a mattress to really feel it out.
Zenhaven is so confident in their product that mattresses come with a 120-day warranty – which begins on the day you receive your bed, not the day of purchase.
This allows for you to properly test out your new mattress in your own home without fully committing.
If you find that this bed isn’t right for you during the initial 120 days, then you can send it back for a full refund (minus the delivery charge).
If you’re not completely swayed with the long trial period, you can still rest a little less worried thanks to Zenhaven’s very long warranty period.
If you decide to keep the mattress and find any manufacturing defects within the first two years, you can send it back in exchange for a new one, free of cost.
Just be sure you haven’t caused any damage yourself either deliberately or through improper care. Also note that after two years, there is a $99 cost to repair any defects.
All being said, a 20-year warranty is one of the longest on the market and is well worth your while.
Despite being a luxury mattress, the Zenhaven is considerably cheaper than its competitors.
No price exceeds $3,000, which is easier on the budget and saves a lot of headache.
This mattress is heavy at 140 pounds, but Zenhaven has a team ready to help you assemble the mattress after purchase.
They will even come help you flip your mattress free of charge if you need it.
All-Natural and Environmentally Friendly
Zenhaven manufactures all their mattresses with 100% organic materials from the cotton to the wool to the latex.
The company sustainably harvests their Talalay latex in a way that doesn’t harm the trees, and the process of making the Latex layers doesn’t produce harmful greenhouse gasses.
Buying this mattress reduces your carbon footprint, so you can feel like an eco-warrior.
Possible Latex Allergy
Though the Zenhaven is hypoallergenic it’s best to err on the side of caution if you have a severe latex allergy.
You won’t know for sure how you’ll react to this mattress, so give it plenty of thought before you consider buying.
Extra Cost for Adjustable Base
Not every mattress works with every base, and getting the base that complements this mattress will cost you extra – thousands extra.
The good news is, Zenhaven mattresses will work on your existing box spring or foundation if it’s still in a good condition. Better news? Doing this won’t void your warranty.
The Lineal adjustable base will bring out the best in the Zenhaven, but if you are working on a budget, then this may not be an option for you.
The Zenhaven mattress is perfect for those who want a luxurious, high-end mattress with the option of being both soft and firm.
It boasts numerous features like a long warranty and trial period so you know that this mattress will last for decades to come.
This all comes at an affordable price for luxury, though if you have a latex allergy, you should carefully consider this option before jumping right in.
That’s it for our Zenhaven Mattress Review. Tempted enough to give it a try?
