There’s something fascinating about finding out how long and how well we sleep.
How great would it be to accurately measure the various stages of our sleep, without having to strap ourselves to a tracking machine in a sleep clinic? While the human body hasn’t yet developed the tracking technology for us to do this automatically, there is a pretty good solution in the meantime : the Sleepbot app.
Sleepbot is one of the most popular mobile sleep tracking apps out there, and could be the tool you’re looking for to learn more about the quality of your sleep.
Here’s what you need to know before you download…
Stand-Out Features of Sleepbot
After unsuccessfully searching for a way to track sleep, Jane Zhu and Edison Wang decided to create Sleepbot.
The app comes with three main features: a smart alarm, a sound recorder and motion tracker. You can choose to activate as many or as few features as you like by simply putting a checkmark next to each one before you try to get some shut eye.
The Sleepbot app will track your night time movements, as well as detect snoring, sleep talking and any disturbances in your sleep during the night.
You can then view your results each morning in a variety of graphs, which show periods of deep and light sleep activity, sleep length and wake times. You can make notes to accompany the graphs about the perceived quality of your sleep, compile your historical graphs for long term insight and spot any trends.
If you’re worried about losing any of your trend graphs, you have the option to back up your data on their website.
There’s also the smart alarm feature. Rather than waking you up at the exact time your alarm is set for, the Sleepbot alarm will activate during your lightest sleep phase within a 30-minute window from your set time.
The app also comes with a soothing blue light display and is free to download. It’s an all-round better way to start the day.
What are the Benefits of Sleep Tracking?
It’s a well known fact that most of us aren’t getting enough sleep.
But what might help us tackle the issues at the heart of our lack of sleep, is finding out exactly where our weaknesses lie.
- Does it take you ages to get off to sleep?
- Are you a restless sleeper?
- Do you wake often during the night?
- How much external noise is there while you sleep?
- Do you snore or sleep talk?
Sleepbot will be able to answer these questions for you and help you take action to improve your sleep. It’s worth it: a lack of sleep can have a really negative impact on your mood, health and overall well-being.
What are the Benefits of a Smart Alarm?
No one likes to be awoken by a noisy alarm when they are in a deep sleep. Plus, waking up at an inappropriate time can lead to sleep inertia.
Sleep inertia is that horrid groggy state that you find yourself in before you’re fully awake. Some people have even said that their sleep inertia makes them feel like they’re drunk and lasts for many hours.
The nice thing about a smart alarm is that it will not wake you up in the middle of a deep sleep cycle and can help to prevent sleep inertia.
The Sleepbot smart alarm will only wake you up in your lightest sleep phase within 30 minutes of the time you set your alarm. It can also help you kick the snooze button habit, and actually get you up at the time you want to be awake.
Sleepbot App Review
We like the Sleepbot app, all in all.
While it can never give you the same kind of accurate results that you would get from a clinical sleep study, it will definitely give you a good idea of the quality of sleep you’re getting and where you need to seek improvement.
It’s definitely one of the better sleep tracking apps on the market right now, mostly because it benefits from both audio and motion tracking to try and give you as full results as possible.
For sleep hacking geeks like us, we can’t get enough of the long-term tracking capabilities of Sleepbot, and the ability to view your trend graphs. It also keeps a tally of your sleep debt, which insomniacs and shift workers may find useful for sleep correction.
Another thing we love is the ability to tap on the graph the next morning at points of restlessness to replay the audio sounds. Is that your partner snoring? Sirens in the streets below?
The smart alarm is another handy feature that certainly has benefits over the usual alarm clock, although isn’t at the sophisticated level of some of the stand-alone smart alarm clocks being developed right now.
Things that could be improved
The only thing we’d change is the 30-minute wake-up window on the smart alarm — although, we wouldn’t get rid of it all together.
We just feel it would be better if you could customise the time frame and choose a 20-minute or 10-minute window instead.
Sleepbot definitely delivers on its promise to help you track your sleep patterns and determine if and how you need to adapt your sleeping routine.
The easy-to-read interactive graphs are what really sets this app apart from other sleep tracking apps, as they highlight any sounds and body movements over the course of the night.
