HTS Verdict

Helix Mattress does a great job at catering to your personal sleep needs and combining them into your perfect personalized mattress.

There are over a dozen options to choose from, but with the help of their sleep quiz you won’t be second guessing which one is best for you.

Pros

  • Personalized comfort
  • Highly supportive
  • Ideal for people with distinct preferences and sleeping positions
  • Sleeps cool
  • Easy shipping and returns
  • 100 night trial
  • 10 year limited warranty
  • Great price

Cons

  • No customization for ‘plus size’ customers
  • They don’t offer the split mattress customization options anymore

The Helix Mattress (available on Helix) isn’t just one mattress. It’s a group of mattresses — and one of them promises to be perfect for your exact needs.

When looking at online retailers for mattresses, you’ve probably noticed that many of them offer a singular, standard model that claims to be perfect for any sleeper. Yet you’re aware that you’re not just “any sleeper” – you’re you, and you’re looking for a mattress that will cater to your specific needs.

Helix is a brand that offers a unique experience that will change the way you shop for mattresses.

They’re one of the first online companies to offer a personalized mattress that you can choose through an online quiz.

Whether you want a little or a lot of support, a plush or firm feel, Helix can help you choose the mattress that’s right for you.

But do they live up to the hype, or are they basically the same as all the other mattress companies?

Let’s take a closer look.

The Positives

Perfect For You

helix mattress review

In the age of online mattress sales, there’s an increasing trend for companies to sell products marketed as ‘universally comfortable’ — i.e. comfortable for everyone.

While I applaud the effort, most of the time it doesn’t quite work. Let’s face it — we’re all different and all want/need different things from our beds.

Helix realize that and offer 6 different standard mattresses (detailed above), as well as a luxe range (with an added 2 inches of pillow top) and the Helix Plus for plus size and very tall people.

Simply take the quiz on their website and find out which one will best suit your needs. You’ll find this especially useful if you’re new to mattress buying and simply aren’t sure what you need. Helix will tell you.

While I didn’t test out all the mattresses, I did try the most popular — the Helix Midnight. Certainly exceptionally comfortable with impressive pressure relief. Intended for side sleepers, I found it great in all positions although did appreciate the way it cushioned my hips when on my side.

Good Bounce

The foam and micro coils contribute to the bounciness of this mattress.

Bounce makes your mattress perfect for both whimsical and, ahem, amorous play, or if you are coming home from a long day and you just want to plop down.

Sleeps Cool

All of the Helix Mattresses come with their Soft Touch Design which is specially designed to increase airflow. Added to the thin cover and breathable foams, this mattress will keep you cool throughout the night.

Forget about waking up in a puddle of your own sweat – Helix knows that nobody wants to sleep in an oven.

No Off-Gassing

Unfortunately, that new mattress smell isn’t quite as appealing as that new car smell.

This notorious smell usually forces you to leave your new mattress in a separate room for a few days to get rid of the stench, despite wanting to break it in right away.

Thankfully however, the Helix mattress has no off-gassing, so you won’t have to pinch your nose or wear a mask while you rest.

This is probably thanks to their mattresses being pretty eco-conscious. Helix mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified meaning they’re made with no harmful materials and won’t be detrimental to your indoor air quality.

As a bonus, everything is recyclable.

100 Night Trial

helix mattress review

All Helix mattresses come with a 100-night trial period, which is pretty good.

You have 100 days to try out your mattress, and if you’re unsatisfied, you can send it back for a full refund.

That’s more than enough time to break in the mattress and see if it’s one you want to keep for years to come.

I believe that Helix doesn’t even try to re-sell their mattresses that haven’t passed the trial. Instead, they try to donate them before recycling them.

10 Year Limited Warranty

All Helix mattresses also come with a 10-year limited warranty, which covers any manufacturer defects.

This warranty is for Helix mattresses but can also be extended to Helix mattress covers as well.

Whatever is wrong (so long as it isn’t caused by you) Helix will repair.

Great Price

I am really impressed with the price of the Helix, especially given its high quality but also in terms of what you get for your money.

It comes with two Helix Dream Pillows free, free shipping and there are financing options available to boot.

Easy Shipping

personalized mattress

Speaking of shipping, Helix mattresses are assembled by hand and shipped from factories across the United States, making these customized mattresses feel a little closer to home.

The mattresses are usually delivered quickly in 3-15 business days so you’re not left waiting in agony wondering what sleeping on your new custom bed will be like.

Another thing you won’t have to stress about is how you’ll get your mattress from your front door to your bedroom.

Helix mattresses are delivered to your door rolled and compressedly packaged in an easy to manage box. They’ll also remove it for you if you’re not totally satisfied after your trial.

Here’s a look at how the Helix looks straight out the box:

The Negatives

What About Plus Size Options?

I really love the way Helix offers such a high level of customization, but this seems to go out of the window for their plus sized customers.

They offer the Helix Plus Mattress for ‘plus size and big & tall people’ but don’t really say what that is. Over 200 lbs? Over 300 lbs? Over 6 ft? Not sure. And there’s just the one mattress. No soft, medium, firm, for side sleepers, for back sleepers etc.

In their blurb regarding the Helix Plus, they say they’ve made it as research showed 30% of their customers had additional needs in this department. That’s a large audience. Why not capitalize on them?

The Plus is an extra inch thick and sports an extra layer of high density 4 pound foam compared to the standard mattresses. To me, that screams extra durability and, as such, I’d be tempted to go for that myself. Even as a smaller guy, that’s appealing.

No More Split Customization

When I first reviewed the Helix mattress a few years ago, they had the brilliant option to choose a bed with split firmness levels — the height of quality customization.

After all, if Helix recognize that not everyone wants the same thing from their mattress, they obviously know that that’s true between couples as well.

But unfortunately this is not longer available. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Material Composition

Helix Soft Touch Design Cover

The Helix Soft Touch Design Cover is thin with a light stretch for optimal airflow.

Memory Plus Foam

Helix’s special foam blend (note: not memory foam) has been especially designed to relieve any pressure points you may have. This is so important for side sleepers who often wake up with sore hips and sides after a night on an inappropriate mattress.

High-Grade Polyfoam

The next layer is the transition layer, made from High-Grade Polyfoam. This is where the ergonomic support comes in to best conform to your body and provide you with what you need. It provides strength and durability in the base layers, whereas the densities of the upper layers are varied. This creates different support layers and profiles to ensure your comfort.

Wrapped Coils

And now comes the so-called ‘Body Shape Layer’.

Helix designs their mattresses with hundreds of individually pocketed micro-coils that promote both weight distribution and pressure relief, while offering a bounce that you’ll enjoy.

They also help to reduce motion transfer so you both won’t be bothered if the other half is tossing and turning throughout the night.

Helix: The Brand

Based in the city that never sleeps (New York, New York), Helix was founded by people who understood just how frustrating the process of finding the right mattress can be.

They believe that there is no one-size-fits-all type of mattress, because everyone is different and therefore everybody sleeps differently.

This is why they developed a customizable experience – so that everyone can get the mattress that best suits them.

Helix believes that “People’s differences should be recognized and celebrated,” and they choose to honour this through their passion for comfort.

Overall Verdict

I’m impressed with Helix — they’ve fully embraced the idea that we all need different things from our mattresses and have created a suite of high quality products.

Comfort, support, pressure relief, a cool touch — all the big benefits get a huge tick with the Helix. They also offer easy shipping and returns, and all at a great price too.

My only niggles are the fact that they don’t offer the same customization options with the Helix Plus Mattress — and I’m wondering why a customer wouldn’t just choose the Plus mattress if it offers greater support and durability.
