Are you looking for the best bassinet? We’ve got you covered.
Newborn babies are big sleepers, sleeping on average around 16 hours a day in short bursts of 2 to 3 hours or so.
Good sleep is vital to babies as it stimulates healthy brain development, decreases the chance of general health problems and emotional difficulties in future life, and helps make your life easier too, as a well rested baby is much happier and less cranky than a tired baby.
So how can you make sure that your newborn is getting the best possible sleep? Just like adults, babies sleep best when they have a bed that is best adapted to their needs.
In the case of newborn babies, the best type of bed might just be a bassinet…

What is a Bassinet?
Bassinets are designed to be just the right snug size for babies of up to 4 to 6 months of age, up to around 25 lbs in weight, or up until the time that a baby is sitting up or rolling over.
The bed part of the bassinet is essentially a type of basket with a stable flat base complete with firm mattress that is ideal for baby.
This basket is suspended at adult hip height from a freestanding supporting frame which can be either stationary or with wheels.
A common feature of many bassinets is that the basket can often be gently swung independently from the frame in order to rock baby to sleep.
Some bassinets are detachable from the frame and can be rested on a flat surface such as a table.
Bassinets vs Cribs
Compared to a bassinet, a crib is larger and better adapted to larger or older babies, although they can also be used for newborns.
Cribs usually have latticed or barred sides, and feature a stable base.
Most cribs have an adjustable mattress height which can be placed higher for newborns making it easier to lay them down, and lowered as the baby grows and starts to stand up in the crib.
Up until a few years ago cribs were available with one or more drop down sides, but new safety regulations have caused these types of cribs to be banned, and it is now only possible to buy a crib with stationary sides.
Cribs are most commonly constructed from wood or metal, and certain more expensive styles can be converted to toddler beds to suit children as they grow.
Here’s a handy video comparison of the two:
Here is our list of the pros and cons of bassinets vs cribs for you to compare…
- Lightweight and easy to move around
- Takes up very little space
- Can easily fit beside the parents’ bed
- Newborn and small babies love the snug size as it makes them feel secure
- It’s easy to gently place babies in a bassinet and lift them out
- Relatively inexpensive
- Can only be used for up to 6 months
- There is a small potential risk of the bassinet tipping over — make sure you buy a stable one
- Stable and sturdy design
- Can be used for a long period of time
- Cribs and accompanying bedding come in a wide variety of styles
- Ideal for babies with their own nursery
- Can be expensive
- Some newborns may find a crib too large and uncomfortable
- Large and can take up a lot of space
- Heavy and not easy to move around
As you can see, there are benefits and disadvantages to both bassinets and cribs.
If you don’t have much room in your home, or if you intend your newborn baby to sleep by your bedside, a bassinet may be the better choice.
Likewise if you want to carry your sleeping baby with you easily from room to room in the first few months, a bassinet is probably more suited to your needs.
However if you have more space and a bigger budget, a crib may be preferable.
Features of the Best Bassinet
Bassinets are available in a whole range of styles with a wide choice of features. The best bassinets have at least a few if the following characteristics…
Mesh or fabric sides
This ensure that babies are able to continue to breathe properly if they should press their faces against the walls of the bassinet. Soft fabric sides also add to the comfort factor.
If you can detach the basket of the bassinet from the frame it means that you can carry baby with you from room to room easily without disrupting sleep.
This is a great feature if you want to take your baby outside, as it provides shade and protection against the sun.
The most important feature of any bassinet is safety. The base should be sturdy, wide, and heavy enough that the bassinet won’t tip over.
Bassinets usually come ready supplied with a mattress. Mattresses should be firm and reach right to the interior edges of the bassinet to eliminate any risk of suffocation.
Bassinets that can be swung in the frame should have a locking mechanism to keep the basket in place when baby is left alone. Also, if the bassinet frame is on casters, these should be lockable to prevent the bassinet sliding about if baby changes position.
Babies need a lot of stuff, and bassinets with pockets or storage underneath for diapers, wipes and other essentials can be very handy – especially if you are on the move.
Bassinet Cost Guide
Prices for bassinets vary wildly, ranging anywhere from around $30 all the way up to about $250.
