Looking for the best lightweight sleeping bag?
We’ve got you covered.
One of the most important bits of kit when camping, a good sleeping bag keeps you warm and dry while you sleep.
This is especially important when backpacking and adventuring, as moving from place to place requires you to carry all your belongings on your back.
In this scenario a lightweight sleeping bag is crucial as it is much lighter and packs up smaller than a regular sleeping bag, making it much more portable.
A lightweight backpacker generally carries a base weight (that’s everything in your entire camping gear kit) of under 20 pounds, and a lightweight sleeping bag should make up no more than 3lbs of that weight.

What is a Lightweight Sleeping Bag?
Lightweight sleeping bags are filed with either synthetic filling or feather down insulation.
Synthetic filling is usually polyester and keeps you warm, dries quickly if it gets wet, and is cheaper than down.
Down (that’s the soft fluffy feathers found underneath a bird’s flight feathers) is lighter and more compressible than synthetic fill, and is extremely durable.
The negative aspect of down is that if it gets wet it loses its insulating power and can be slow to dry.
Many high quality lightweight sleeping bags use a protective treatment on the down insulation to prevent this happening, and/or a water resistant and breathable inner lining to keep the down dry.
Lightweight sleeping bags should come with a compression sack to allow the bag to be squeezed down to the smallest possible size while packed away.
The three most common categories for camping sleeping bags, based on temperature rating, are:
- Summer Season – A temperature rating of 35°F or higher. Best for camping in warm weather
- 3-Season – A temperature rating of 10°F to 35°F. Best for camping in spring, summer, and fall
- Winter – A temperature rating of 10°F or less. Made for camping in winter weather.
To be as effective as possible for their weight, lightweight sleeping bags are most often ‘mummy’ shaped or semi-rectangular to ensure that they sit close to the sleeper’s body, with very little space within the bag for cold spots to form, keeping them thermally efficient.
They also most commonly feature an integral hood to minimize the amount of heat lost from the body while sleeping.
Sleeping bag fabric is quick drying, and the case of the best lightweight sleeping bags use a special sturdy ripstop fabric which resists tearing, and are often covered with a protective coating to make the outside of the sleeping bag waterproof or water resistant.
Inner linings are soft and breathable to be comfortable on the skin yet allow air to circulate.
Benefits of a Lightweight Sleeping Bag
The most obvious benefit of a lightweight sleeping bag is portability.
Weighing less makes it much easier to carry around, so it’s the ideal choice for backpackers who would otherwise get tired hauling a normal sleeping bag around.
Likewise, the fact that lightweight sleeping bags tend to be much more compact than normal sleeping bags means that they take up less space when backpacking, leaving you unencumbered and able to move freely and enjoy the great outdoors.
When to Use a Lightweight Sleeping Bag
When you’re choosing a backpacking sleeping bag, you need to take into account warmth, weight, comfort, functionality and price to find the best sleeping bag for your adventure style.
For example, if you’re a world traveler and will be hopping between many different countries, a three season lightweight sleeping bag with down filling would be best as it is a lot more versatile.
In any case, choosing a lightweight sleeping bag gives you the freedom to go on epic adventures off the beaten track.
Here’s a great video guide to choosing the best sleeping bag for backpacking:
If you prefer to car camp or family camp, a lightweight sleeping bag may not be necessary as when travelling with a vehicle there is more space to pack all your camping gear.
Normal sleeping bags can often also be zipped together to create a double sleeping bag for couples, or completely unzipped to be flat and double up as somewhere comfortable to sit on the ground.
